County Clare is probably most famous for the Cliffs of Moher which is on every tourist's itinerary. There are however many other cliffs that one can admire along the Clare coast and none more so than those at Loop Head which is right at the tip of the county. The cliffs are vertigo-inducing and you cannot help but be aware of your own mortality as you look down at the Atlantic crashing against the cliff walls.
Some tourists seem to be totally indifferent to the danger of being swept off the cliffs by a gust of wind to meet a certain death down below and insist on going right to the edge off the cliffs. There were two tourists there when we visited a couple of days ago and I could not bear to look at them as they preened over the side to take photos of the cliffs. I am amazed how idiotic people can be when they are travelling.

Jenny and I paid a fleeting visit to County Clare a few years back, but apart from the Cliffs of Moher didn't see much of the coastline. It would obviously repay another visit. I sometimes stand quite close to cliff edges and Jenny always gets very nervous and warns me not to go too far!
Cliffs of Moher are always way too busy, never been to Loop Head though. I love the cliffs by Dun Aengus on the Aran islands though the most. Like you I can't bear to look at people getting too close to the edge - it makes my stomach turn.
Maybe they should put up signs, like the road signs: 'In 2008, 5 people fell to their deaths from this cliff' (I'm making that statistic up, but you know what I mean). It might stop people from being so foolish. Lots of people DO fall off. I love it there, but it is exhiliratingly nerve wracking too.
We had an incident up north near the Giant's Causeway when 2 American soldiers who were on their holidays had to be rescued after attempting to scale a cliff.
U like WRW's idea. I've got my own personal built-in fear of death thing that goes into over-drive near cliffs, bridges and rollercoasters. Very useful.
There was an article about this very thing in the Irish Times recently. From my couple of years working in the tourist office I think that tourists really should have to pass a tourism aptitude test before being allowed roam abroad. It only suits the country to keep the eejets at home so as not to give the country a bad name.
